1.6 M INING M ETHODS<br />

The <strong>Project</strong> is a 32,000 t/d open pit mine that will be mined using conventional open<br />

pit mining methods. A mine production schedule consisting of five mining stages<br />

was developed for the <strong>Project</strong> starting with the development of a starter pit, located<br />

roughly in the centre of the mineralized area. Table 1.4 summarizes key mining<br />

details.<br />

An economic cut-off grade of 0.22% nickel was calculated for planning mine<br />

production. The total material (waste and mineralized material) produced annually at<br />

the mine will peak at 51,000,000 t/a and will average 39,000,000 t/a, with a 37-year<br />

life-of-mine (LOM) and a stripping ratio of 2.57:1.<br />

1.7 M INERAL P ROCESSING AND M ETALLURGICAL T ESTING<br />

1.7.1 MINERAL PROCESSING<br />

The current proposal under consideration for <strong>Wellgreen</strong> includes a 32,000 t/d<br />

conventional crushing and grinding circuit <strong>com</strong>prising a jaw crusher and semiautogenous<br />

grinding (SAG) mill <strong>com</strong>bination followed by a MF2 type process in order<br />

to produce a bulk nickel-copper concentrate for sale and treatment off-site. Although<br />

developed primarily for UG2 ores (South African PGE deposit), the MF2<br />

configuration offers certain advantages such as prevention of over-grinding and<br />

slimes generation, increased rejection of talc, chlorite and pyrrhotite and early<br />

recovery of PGM. The concept is to gradually reduce the size of the ore particles,<br />

and float the liberated material immediately after each size reduction. Secondary<br />

grinding will be by ball mills and tertiary grinding by vertimills. The process will be<br />

<strong>com</strong>prised of two trains, which are identical from crushing through to the concentrate<br />

and tailings thickeners. The concentrate will be thickened, filtered, and loaded on<br />

trucks to be transported for further processing off-site (eg. sale or toll smelting). The<br />

tailings will be thickened and pumped to the tailings management facility (TMF).<br />
