applications were received and processed; 4,184 candidates interviewed for civil<br />
services/posts (interviews for Defence Services were conducted by SSB of Ministry<br />
of Defence) and 2,889 candidates recommended for appointment to various posts,<br />
1,466 for civil services/posts and 1,423 for Defence Services/Posts. During this<br />
period, the Commission revised the scheme of the Combined Medical Services<br />
Examination to be effective from the Combined Medical Services Examination,<br />
2008. During this period, it was also decided to increase the number of attempts in<br />
Civil Services Examinations for general category differently-abled candidates from<br />
four to seven to be effected from the Civil Services Examination, 2008. During this<br />
period, the syllabi prescribed for General Studies papers and all the optional papers<br />
except the literature papers of Languages under the scheme of Civil Services (Main)<br />
Examination were revised in consultation with academic experts. The revised<br />
syllabus has been given effect from the Civil Services Examination, 2008.The UPSC<br />
has displayed in its website various details about its working and matters relating to<br />
the examinations conducted by it. The UPSC has also an Information and Facilitation<br />
Counter to help the candidates for any queries and submission of applications, etc.<br />
15.1.4The Parliamentary Standing Committee for Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and<br />
Justice has taken up the subject of ‘Working of UPSC’ and the Committee took oral<br />
evidence of Senior Officers from the Department of Personnel and Training and the<br />
UPSC through few sessions of meetings. The report of the Committee is yet to be<br />
received.<br />
SET UP AND FUNCTIONS OF STAFF SELECTION COMMISSION<br />
15.2 The set up of Staff Selection Commission (SSC) comprises its headquarters located<br />
in New Delhi and nine regional/sub regional offices located at different parts of the<br />
country. The headquarter comprises one chairperson, two members, one secretarycum-controller<br />
of examinations and other supporting officers and staff. The regional<br />
offices are headed by regional directors and sub-regional offices by deputy directors.<br />
The sanctioned strength of SSC including regional offices is 496, consisting of 42<br />
Group ‘A’ and 163 Group ‘B’ officers in addition to 291 Group ‘C’/ ‘D’ officials.<br />
