DEP<strong>AR</strong>TMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE REFORMS & PUBLIC GRIEVANCES<br />

Scheme, all officers of central and state governments individually or as a group or<br />

as organisation are eligible. The award carries a medal, scroll and a cash amount<br />

of one lakh rupees. In case of a group, the total award money is five lakh rupees<br />

subject to a maximum of one lakh rupees per person. For an organisation, this is<br />

limited to five lakh rupees. The Department of Administrative Reforms and Public<br />

Grievances is the nodal agency for inviting nominations and coordinating the process<br />

for the Awards.<br />

5.1 The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh gave away the Prime Minister’s Awards<br />

for Excellence in Public Administration for the year 2006-07 for the second time on<br />

21 April, 2008, on the occasion of Civil Services Day. There were fourteen initiatives<br />

in three categories - individual, group and organisation for the year that were<br />

awarded. Under the individual category the awards were bagged by (i) Shri J. K.<br />

Tripathy, Inspector General of Police, Government of Tamil Nadu for ‘Trichy<br />

Community Policing’ , (ii) Dr. T. Chandra Shekhar, Vice President and CEO<br />

Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority, Mumbai for ‘Changing face<br />

of Thane and Nagpur Cities’, (iii) Ms. Sheela Rani Chunkat, Chairman, Tamil Nadu<br />

Industrial Investment Corporation Ltd., for her initiative ‘Improving Maternal and<br />

Child Survival and Health’. Under the Group category the awards were given to (i)<br />

A team of officers from Uttar Pradesh for ‘Lokvani – an effort to empower the citizen’<br />

(Uttar Pradesh), (ii) A team of officers from Office of Comptroller and Auditor<br />

General of India for ‘Information Technology Audit Initiative’, (iii) A team of officers<br />

from the state of Uttarkhand for ‘Effective Management of Protected Areas –<br />

Uttarakhand’, (iv) A team of officers at Centre for Railway Information System for<br />

‘Unreserved Ticketing System – Ministry of Railways’, (v) A team of officers from<br />

Government of Maharashtra for ‘Rajarshi Shahu Sarvangin Karyakram, Zilla<br />

Parishad, Kolhapur, Maharashtra’, (vi) A team of officers from Government of NCT<br />

of Delhi for ‘Radical Improvement in Delhi Government School System, Government<br />

of NCT of Delhi’, (vii) A team of officers from state of Jammu and Kashmir for<br />

‘Extraordinary Performance in Emergent Situation of Earthquake in the State of<br />

J&K’. Under the Organisation Category the awards were given to (i) Water and<br />

Sanitation Management Organisation (WASMO) – ‘Innovative Participatory Drinking<br />

Water Delivery Approach in Rural Areas of Gujarat’ – Government of Gujarat, (ii)<br />

State Poverty Eradication Mission, Kudumbashree – ‘ Asraya – Destitute<br />
