<strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Auburn</strong>, AlabamaApproximately 340 <strong>City</strong> and 40 WaterBoard regular, full-time employees staffthese departments, producing highqualityand cost-effective public services.Public Safety Services. The PublicSafety Department is comprised <strong>of</strong> thesedivisions: Police, Fire, Communications,Codes Enforcement, and Administration.The Police Division includes 73 police<strong>of</strong>ficers, providing an average emergencycall response time <strong>of</strong> 3 minutes. The<strong>City</strong>’s police force is augmented by<strong>Auburn</strong> University’s 27 full-time sworn<strong>of</strong>ficers. The Fire Division includes 29regular, full-time firefighters and 69student firefighters, manning four firestations. The staffing, training, andequipment levels in the Fire Divisionenable <strong>City</strong> residents to enjoy a Class 2fire insurance rating. Communicationsprovides E-911 emergency response anddispatch services to the public. CodesEnforcement monitors constructionactivities within the <strong>City</strong> and compliancewith public safety ordinances.Public Works Services. The<strong>City</strong>’s Public Works Department overseesthe development and maintenance <strong>of</strong> the<strong>City</strong>’s roadway transportation system.Currently including over 194 miles <strong>of</strong>paved streets and less than 2.2 miles <strong>of</strong>unpaved roads, Public Works expendsapproximately $1 million per fiscal yearon the <strong>City</strong>’s road maintenance.Community Pr<strong>of</strong>ileplanning and design services for the <strong>City</strong>’sfuture highway, bikeway, and sidewalksystems. In addition, Public Works alsomonitors and inspects the construction andrenovation <strong>of</strong> <strong>City</strong> facilities, includingbuildings, storm drainage, and parks.Environmental Services. Given<strong>Auburn</strong> University’s origins as anagricultural and mechanical college, it isnot surprising that <strong>Auburn</strong>’s residents givea high priority to its environmental quality<strong>of</strong> life. The <strong>City</strong>’s Environmental ServicesDepartment maintains the cleanliness <strong>of</strong><strong>City</strong>’s rights <strong>of</strong> way to a standardconsidered remarkable for a universitytown. Environmental Services collectshousehold waste, recyclables and yardwaste, <strong>of</strong>fering citizens their choice <strong>of</strong>lower-cost curbside collection or higher-feeback yard collection service. This <strong>City</strong>Department is also responsible for animalcontrol and maintenance <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>’svehicle fleet.Leisure Services.
