was the only Roman emperor who ever fell into Sasanian captivity. In the<br />

foreground we see the Roman emperor on horseback, represented as an<br />

elderly bearded man. His hands are tied up and his feet chained together.<br />

ˇSāpūr, who can be recognised by the honorific parasol, turns his head<br />

towards the Roman emperor as he leads him away in triumph. The Sasanian<br />

ruler is accompanied by his usual train, namely a page holding the parasol,
