There is no doubt that the peace treaty of 298 made the Roman Eastern<br />

frontier more secure. During the first Tetrarchy the so-called Strata Diocletiana<br />

from Damascus via Palmyra to Sura 72 was built and fortified with<br />

numerous forts (map 3), and a security zone with military roads, fortresses<br />

and watch towers created between Hauran in Southern Syria and the Sinai.<br />
