vi)vii)viii)ix)use earth bunds (made of excavated or stockpiled materials) as noise barriers atmain construction work sites (where it is practicable to do so);wherever reasonably practicable and especially during particularly sensitiveperiods eg night time activity, the quietest methods of material breaking will beutilised eg by the use of hydraulic or electrically powered tools, thermal lancesetc with pneumatic and percussive methods used as a last resort where quietermethods are not practicable;hydraulic ‘munchers’ will be used where reasonably practicable in preference tobreakers; there will be a general presumption against peckers being used duringnight time activities;crane spindles, pulley wheels, telescopic sections and moving parts of workingplatforms shall be adequately lubricated in order to prevent undue screechingand squealing;x) thermal cutting equipment shall be used in preference to cold cutting wherepossible;xi)xii)in laying out the construction sites, the contractor shall avoid locating siteentrances opposite or adjacent to noise sensitive receptors, wherever practicable;andshouting and raised voices shall be kept to a minimum.B6.2 VIBRATIONVibration ControlB6.2.1Subject to the specific requirements of the local authority, the following minimumrequirements must be met:i. To protect residents from nuisance the Contractor shall, as far as practicable, notregularly exceed Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) values of 1mm/s (as specified inBS5228-2:2009) unless building occupants are given prior warning andexplanation of the source and likely duration of the vibration. Similarly, toprotect occupants of commercial buildings, vibration levels should not regularlyexceed 3mm/s PPV, with the same provisos.ii.To protect buildings from physical damage, peak particle velocity levels shouldnot exceed 10 mm/sec except for particularly sensitive buildings where the levelshould not exceed 5 mm/sec. Those buildings which are to be considered assensitive shall be agreed with the local authority. If vibration levels arepredicted to exceed the criteria specified, vibration monitoring shall beundertaken by a suitably qualified practitioner during the activity and thecontractor shall adopt alternative methods of working to reduce vibration levelsas necessary. The monitoring programme shall be agreed with the localauthority. This programme will include the location and frequency of readingsand will identify to whom the results should be made available.ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTB-24CHILTERN RAILWAYS
