D5.3.4Train SpeedsLine speeds define the maximum allowed train speeds along various sectionsof the route and have been used in this assessment to define train speeds. Forthe purpose of defining line speeds, the route has been split into sections. These sections are presented along with their associated line speeds in TableD5.4 below. Additional speed restrictions for freight trains in the area of theOxford North Junction have also been included.Table D5.4Line Speeds And Speed Limits Along the Proposed AlignmentRoute SectionMaximum Line Speed(kph)80North of the Bicester Chord (no Chilterntrains)Bicester Chord (only Chiltern trains) 64Bicester Chord to Bicester Town Station 80Bicester Town Station to Water Eaton 161Wolvercote Tunnel area 121 56The Oxford North Junction 121 48The Oxford North Junction to close to 121Oxford StationOxford Station Area 40Freight Speed Limit(kph)Close to stations, trains will either accelerate or decelerate. The actual speedsthat have been used in such locations depend on the proximity of the station.Receptor 22 (Stable Close) is located opposite the proposed new platform atOxford station. The average speed at this location is assumed to be 15 kph, astrains brake or accelerate from standing to the line speed of 40 kph.Receptor 21 (Rewley Road south) is located opposite the railway a little furtherout of Oxford station. The average speed at this location is assumed to be30 kph, as trains brake or accelerate from standing to the line speed of 40 kph.Receptor 19 (Islip station), is located next to Islip station. The majority ofChiltern trains will not stop at this station however and so no reduction inspeed has been assumed. Receptor 5 (London Road), is located in closeproximity to Bicester Town station. An average speed of 60 kph has beenassumed for Chiltern and EWR trains as they brake or accelerate fromstanding to the line speed of 80 kph. EWR trains will not stop at Islip stationand Cross Country trains will not stop at Islip or Bicester Town station and sothe maximum line speeds have been used. Freight trains will not stop at anystations, and the maximum line / train speeds have been adopted throughoutthe route for these trains.D5.3.5Line UsePhase 2 proposes a dual line from Bicester to a point south of the OxfordNorth Junction (adjacent to Cox’s Ground / Stone Meadow, Oxford). At thispoint, one line will continue on to Oxford station where it will split shortlybefore the platforms, terminating at the two platforms to the far east of thestation. The other line will not continue and trains will be directed across toENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTD-30CHILTERN RAILWAYS
