J2.3.3Time varying emissionsAs the number of trains vary each hour, a time-varying factor for 24 hourshave been used to account for peak and non-peak operation. A worst-caseassumption has been made by assuming that there is no difference betweenweekday and weekend train schedules. Table J2.3 shows the average emissionrates applied for Phase 2 for a 24-hour period, while Table J2.4 shows the timevaryingfactors.Table J2.3Train Average Emission Rates over a 24-hour Period (g/m/s)Average Emission Rate (g/m/s)NO X SO 2 PM 10Oxford North Junction – Oxford 1.15 × 10 -4 8.18 × 10 -6 2.37 × 10 -6Bicester - Oxford North Junction 1.94 × 10 -4 2.13 × 10 -5 4.13 × 10 -6Table J2.4Time-varying FactorsHour Oxford North Junction - Oxford Bicester - Oxford North JunctionNO X SO 2 PM 10 NO X SO 2 PM 100 0.71 0.71 0.71 0.75 0.71 0.741 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.17 0.32 0.202 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.17 0.32 0.203 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.17 0.32 0.204 0.00 0.00 0.00 0.17 0.32 0.205 0.28 0.28 0.28 0.42 0.49 0.436 1.14 1.14 1.14 1.00 0.88 0.987 1.70 1.70 1.70 1.51 1.41 1.508 1.70 1.70 1.70 1.51 1.41 1.509 1.70 1.70 1.70 1.51 1.41 1.5010 1.14 1.14 1.14 1.17 1.19 1.1811 1.14 1.14 1.14 1.17 1.19 1.1812 1.14 1.14 1.14 1.17 1.19 1.1813 1.14 1.14 1.14 1.17 1.19 1.1814 1.14 1.14 1.14 1.17 1.19 1.1815 1.14 1.14 1.14 1.17 1.19 1.1816 1.14 1.14 1.14 1.17 1.19 1.1817 1.70 1.70 1.70 1.51 1.41 1.5018 1.70 1.70 1.70 1.51 1.41 1.5019 1.70 1.70 1.70 1.51 1.41 1.5020 1.14 1.14 1.14 1.17 1.19 1.1821 0.85 0.85 0.85 1.01 1.09 1.0122 0.85 0.85 0.85 0.83 0.77 0.8223 0.85 0.85 0.85 0.83 0.77 0.82It is noted that the emission factors apply to a moving train and no emissionfactors are available for idling trains. It was assumed that train emissions arecontinuously distributed during the operating schedule and the emissionswere evenly distributed along the length of each railway, ie it was not possibleto account for trains slowing on the approach to the station, idling at theplatform and then accelerating from the station. Neither was it possible totake into account the change in train emissions due to any gradients.ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTJ6CHILTERN RAILWAYS
