Additional after-treatment technology (such as particulatefilters) shall be used, where appropriate.Precautions shall be taken to prevent the emission of smoke or fumes fromconstruction vehicles, site plant and stored materials including volatile substances.Vehicles and plant (NRMM) shall be serviced regularly to ensure they are wellmaintained and meet any statutory emission limits/ opacity tests.Measures shall be taken to ensure that engines and motors are not left running forlong periods when not in use.The engines of all parked vehicles or vehicles waiting to enter any work area shallbe switched off within two minutes of arrival.Vehicle exhaust shall be directed away from the ground and positioned so that theyare not directed at site entrances.Where possible, reduce the number of vehicle movements through better planning.Consider using consolidation centres to ensure that only the materials needed forthe job access the site.Where possible and if safety concerns can be overcome, avoid use of diesel or petrolpowered generators by using mains electricity or battery-powered equipment.Work compounds shall be laid out so that accesses and loading areas are located asfar away from sensitive neighbours as practicably possible and so that temporarystructures screen dusty areas where practicable.There shall be no burning of waste on site.The provisions of the Environment Act 1995, the Clean Air Act 1993 and the Healthand Safety at Work etc Act 1974 in relation to emissions to air shall apply.ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTB-27CHILTERN RAILWAYS
