B10ECOLOGYB10.1 ENCROACHMENT INTO WILDLIFE AREASB10.1.1The contractor will comply with the provisions of the Wildlife and Countryside Act1981 (as amended), and other relevant nature conservation legislation including theConservation (Natural Habitats & c.) Regulations 1994, and other relevant policyand guidance.The following general requirements will be applied:i. An on-site ecologist and environmental clerk of works will be appointed toensure that construction activities adhere to detailed method statements (inareas of high ecological sensitivity) and good environmental practice.ii.iii.iv.Precautions will be taken to prevent the entry of pollutants into allwaterbodies and water courses, as described in Section B9.Standards of dust and air pollution control, as set out in Section B7 will beapplied to protect adjacent habitats.Habitat loss will be minimised by keeping the working corridor and extentof working areas to a minimum necessary for the construction works to beundertaken. Removal of habitats and new planting shall be undertaken asappropriate in consultation with the local authority.v. Adjacent habitats of value will be fenced off to prevent unnecessaryincursion or damage. Construction staff shall be made aware of the need toavoid damage to adjacent habitats, specifically sensitive habitats such asdesignated sites or sites containing protected species.vi.vii.Areas of habitat disturbed during construction in areas not required forpermanent works shall be reinstated on completion of the works.Soil stripping, storage and placing shall comply with the guidelines set outin British Standard (BSI) Code of Practice for Earthworks (BS6031).B10.2 DISTURBANCE AND DAMAGE TO HABITATSB10.2.1B10.2.2Habitat loss will be limited to the minimum needed for safe implementation of theworks.Temporary work areas (including site accesses) will be situated on areas of hardstanding or areas of low nature conservation value where possible (e.g. arablefields).ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTB-40CHILTERN RAILWAYS
