Chiltern Railways trainsDuring phase 1, Chiltern Railways will run a service between Oxford andBicester. Their train stock will comprise a mix of Class 168 DMU’s and Class67 locos pulling MkIII coaches. Details of the mix of trains to be used have yetto be finalised. Noise data for the two train types have been reviewed, and theClass 168 DMU adopted as a reasonable worst case scenario. Class 168 DMU’swill be run as a train of up to eight cars during peak hours (between 07.00 and09.00 and between 17.00 and 19.00), and four cars during off-peak hours. Thisis based on service forecasts for the year 2026 (see Table 14.11 for details).A Chiltern Railways passenger service level of 61 train movements per dayand 7 per night has been assumed. This has been based on a service frequencyof two trains per hour in each direction for the majority of the day but with notrains running before 06.00 and a reduction in service to one train per hour ineach direction after 22.00 with one train from Oxford to Bicester between 21.00and 22.00 and no trains from oxford to Bicester after midnight.EWR trainsDuring phase 2, EWR will run a passenger service which will compriseClass 172 DMU’s. Based on a 15 year look ahead, these have been modelled as3 car trains. The service will operate at the same frequency as the Chilternpassenger service, providing two trains per hour in each direction from 0530to 0100 each day, however no information on a reduction inservice frequencyearly in the morning and late at night is available and so the full servicefrequency has been assumed throughout the service period (05.30 – 01.00).Cross Country trainsDuring phase 2, Cross Country trains will run their passenger service betweenOxford and Bicester. At present, this service runs between Oxford andBanbury (and already uses the stretch of the line between Oxford station andthe Oxford North Junction). This service consists of Class 220 ‘Voyager’ trainscomprising up to five cars. The maximum five cars has been assumed as theworst case. This train will operate at a frequency of one train per hour in eachdirection throughout the service period (05.30 – 01.00).D5.3.3Freight TrainsFreight trains will generally be hauled by Class 66 locos. These engines areused by the vast majority of the UK freight loco fleet, and most trains will behauled by them for the foreseeable future. Although this could change overtime, newer locos (eg the new Class 68 locos on order from Freightliner whorun the waste trains), are likely to be quieter. At present, freight trains willtypically comprise 15 wagons, with occasional shorter trains. Phase 1 freighttrains will continue to be of a similar length, and 15 wagons has been used inthis assessment. Additional freight trains are expected as part of Phase 2,between the Oxford North Junction and Bicester. As with the Cross Countryservice, these trains already run between Oxford and Banbury and so form aENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTD-26CHILTERN RAILWAYS
