3.5 WATER RESOURCESOverview3.5.1 This scoping section introduces the main anticipated aspects of the Evergreen 3Project that have the potential to interact with, and impact upon, the waterenvironment.3.5.2 The proposals will cross a number of watercourses and drainage channels, andworks include the introduction and re-provision of bridges, cuttings,embankments, and the construction of additional hard standing at existing andproposed station locations. The area that will be crossed by the railway has beenclassified as Flood Zone 1, 2 and 3, representing areas of low, medium and highflood risk (see Figure 3.3). The impacts of the Scheme upon drainage, flood watermovement and, in particular upon areas of active flood plain, are considered to beof high importance within the assessment of potential environmental impacts.Aspects of the route and its design will therefore need to be carefully andsensitively progressed, both to minimise potential adverse impacts to flooding, andto protect the railway and its passengers from the effects of such events.3.5.3 Potential impacts associated with the scheme have been summarised within Section3.5.5 and 3.5.6, below. The methodology to be applied to the assessment of thepotential impacts to flooding and the water environment and the evaluation criteriaare reported in (Section 4).3.5.4 Due to the interactions between the water, ecological and geological environments,it is recommended that the ecology and land quality sections of this report arereferred to alongside this water resources and flooding scope.Potential Impacts3.5.5 From an initial consideration of the hydrological environment along the route of theproposed railway, and the proposed construction and operational aspects of thescheme, the following potential impacts have been identified for consideration inthe EIA:• impacts to surface water and groundwater quality, and associated riparian orconnected habitats;• impacts to groundwater and surface water flow eg impoundments, drainagealterations (particularly cross-drainage), the introduction of new drainagesystems, hardstanding, embankments and cuttings; and• possible impacts upon the movement of flood waters and flood storage capacityassociated with the dissection of the flood plain and Scheme land-take.3.5.6 Whilst the scheme is not expected to impact adversely upon the hydrologicalenvironment, the potential for enhancement will be borne in mind in relation to thealteration and re-provision of existing drainage systems and watercourse crossings.ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT28CHILTERN RAILWAYS LTD
