B10.5.5B10.5.6Woody material generated should be retained on site as far as is reasonablypossible.Adverse effects on all trees within or in the vicinity of the site shall be minimised bythe adoption of suitable mitigation measures. These may include but are notlimited to the following:i. selective removal of lower branches in an approved manner, to reducemechanical damage by construction plant;ii.iii.iv.the use of matting around the root zone to minimise soil compaction;notwithstanding (ii) above, construction activities shall be managed tominimise compaction of the ground beneath the entire canopy of the tree.No heavy materials or plant shall be stored, and construction trafficmovements shall be controlled, by fencing or other means, to minimisevehicle movement beneath the canopy; andthe use of chestnut paling around the trunk to prevent damage.B10.6 TREE REPLACEMENTB10.6.1In line with best practice and relevant legislation and standards, tree and scrubremoval will be avoided wherever possible. Where existing trees have amenityvalue, for example, at Bicester, Islip and Water Eaton stations and around TubbsLane, in Bicester, it will be a requirement to replace any trees that are removed witha suitably sized transplant to the approval of the local authority. The supply,storage, handling, planting and maintenance of new planting shall be undertaken inaccordance with the appropriate British Standards, including, but not necessarilylimited to the following:(BS5837: 2005) Trees in relation to construction;(BS3998: 1989) Recommendations for Tree Works; and(BS4428: 1989) Code of Practice for General Landscape Operations (excludinghard surfaces).B10.7 CONTROL OF INVASIVE AND ALIEN SPECIESB10.7.1If any invasive alien species listed on Schedule 9, Part II of the Wildlife andCountryside Act 1981 and amendments, is identified along the route, includingJapanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica), or giant hogweed (Heracleummantegazzianum), a strategy will be developed by CRCL and implemented duringthe construction phase of the project to manage their presence. The strategy willensure the control of these species and prevent the spread of them within andoutside the development area. The soil containing these species or parts thereofshall be dealt with as contaminated material and disposed of in accordance withparagraph 8.2 of this Code.ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTB-46CHILTERN RAILWAYS
