J1INTRODUCTIONChapter 13 of the ES summarises the air quality impact assessment from theconstruction and operation of the railway. This Annex describes the data/assumptions and assessment methodology that were used for the operationphase of the assessment pertaining to moving trains and road traffic. The Scheme is being considered in two phases. In Phase 1, Chiltern Rail willoperate a service and the current freight train service continues. In Phase 2,EWR operates additional services. This phase includes additional freightservices which may run throughout the night and an additional CrossCountry train service (see Section 2). This assessment considers the ‘worstcase’scenario and predicts the air quality impacts that may occur from theoperation of Phase 2.The assessment of air quality impact of the proposed Scheme consideredemissions from diesel passenger and freight trains, their atmosphericdispersion and the consequent predicted pollutant concentrations at selectedrepresentative receptor locations along the ~ 20 km rail line which is to bedual tracked in Phase 2. The main pollutants associated with railwayemissions are nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), sulphur dioxide (SO 2 ) and particulatematter (assumed as PM 10 ). The main pollutants associated with trafficemissions are NO 2 and PM 10 .ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTJ1CHILTERN RAILWAYS
