B9PROTECTION OF THE WATER ENVIRONMENTB9.1 OVERVIEWB9.1.1B9.1.2B9.1.3Measures presented here have been developed to an appropriate level relative tothe design detail required for TWA application. It is recognised that as the designsprogress, there will be a continued overall commitment to minimise potentialadverse effects to water resources and flood risk. Aspects and components of theScheme will also be subject to additional assessments and surveys, such as Level 3Flood Risk Assessments and invasive species checks. The following measures aretherefore anticipated to evolve during the next stages of design, to reflect theemergence of any new issues, unforeseen at the current time, and the reduction insignificance of anticipated risks in other areas as the current reasonable worst caseassessments are refined. All works will be conducted in accordance with Network Rail standards and goodpractice with regards to the management of risks to the water environment. All relevant and current British Standards will be complied with. Where standardsare being revised, including BS 6031:1981 Code of Practice for Earthworks regardingthe general control of site drainage, which is due to be replaced in the next 12months by draft BS 6031:2009 Code of Practice for Earthworks. The Contractor willadhere to whichever version is in force.B9.2 POLLUTION PREVENTION AND CONTROLB9.2.1B9.2.2To minimise potential pollution risks, a Pollution Prevention and EmergencyResponse Plan (PPERP) will be developed to be implemented during construction. The plan will include the requirement for suitably trained personnel and theprovision of equipment to contain and clean up any accidental releases. The planwill be progressed as part of the Code of Construction Practice (CoCP), according tobest practice guidance and advice, such as the EA’s Pollution Prevention Guideline(PPG) 21: Pollution Incident Response Planning.Contractors and sub-contractors will be required to comply with Regulation 21 of theGroundwater Regulations (1998) as amended by the anticipated release of theGroundwater Regulations 2009 this autumn and to follow good practice guidancesuch as PPG 2: Above Ground Oil Storage Tanks, PPG5: Works and Maintenance In orNear Water and PPG 6: Working at Construction and Demolition Sites published by theEnvironment Agency.ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTB-32CHILTERN RAILWAYS
