B10.4.7All construction works, including compound lighting should be directed downtowards the working area to minimise impacts on bats roosting, foraging andcommuting in surrounding habitats. Lighting should be of a type that will notattract significant numbers of insects as this is likely to encourage bat foragingwithin the working corridor.OttersB10.4.8B10.4.9Otters are known to use the river banks in the vicinity of the Cherwell and MillStream viaducts. Open trenches or holes in the ground in construction areas thatcross established otter pathways must be covered overnight. Alternatively, acrossing point should be provided. Planks should also be placed in trenches at anangle of 45 degrees or less to allow the animals to escape in the event that they fallin.Where safe to do so, provision needs to be made to allow otters access throughconstruction areas at night (when work is not taking place) to permit movementsalong the watercourses, or alternative provisions will be made.Great Crested NewtsB10.4.10B10.4.11B10.4.12B10.4.13Great crested newt presence/ absence surveys will be undertaken within allwaterbodies located within 500 m of the scheme boundary; this will be followed bypopulation estimates and will include an additional 2 surveys on all ponds withconfirmed presence of great crested newts to inform the licence application. Theamount of survey effort required to inform the licence application will be furtherdiscussed with Natural England.Following the great crested newts surveys being completed an appropriate licencewill be obtained by CRCL from Natural England to allow works to be undertakenwithin 500 m of any waterbodies supporting great crested newts. As part of the licensing conditions, specialist fencing, designed to restrict amphibianmovement will need to be erected to ensure that newts do not enter theconstruction/operation areas whilst allowing free passage in the opposite direction. To remove newts from within the fenced areas, pit-fall traps and mats will also linethe inside of the fencing. The detailed specification of the mitigation will be agreedwith Natural England, when applying for the development licence.Once the fencing has been erected the pit fall traps and mats will be checked on adaily based and individuals will be re-located, outside of the working area, into asheltered location. Once the fenced areas have been cleared of great crested newtsfor 5 consecutive days, construction work can proceed within these areas; whilstregular checks of the fencing are made to ensure it is maintained throughout theconstruction period.BadgersENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENTB-43CHILTERN RAILWAYS
