By sealed imperial orders sent to her coloniesaround the world, Spain threw out all Jesuits in 1767. This decreesuppressed them in the Philippines, Argentina, New Granada (Colombia),Peru, Chili, Ecuador, Guatemala, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, NewMexico and Arizona. Austria did the same in 1773. Finally, Pope ClementXIV in 1773 issued the document ‘Dominus ac Redemptor’ [found inNicolini’s History of the Jesuits, pp. 387-406] abolishing the Jesuit Orderaltogether, listed eleven Popes as having tried to curb their excesses.Among them were Benedict XIV, Innocent XI, Innocent XIII andClement XIII. He cited the Jesuits for opposition to ‘other religiousorders,’ for ‘revolts and intestine troubles in some of the Catholic states’and ‘persecutions against the church in Europe and Asia.’ ‘Thereremained no other remedy to so great evils . . . and this step was necessaryin order to prevent the Christians from rising one against the other andfrom massacring each other in the very bosom of our common mother, theholy church.’[Therefore, the Papal Caesar concluded,]‘ . . . after a mature deliberation, we do out of our certain knowledge andthe fullness of our apostolic power, suppress and abolish the saidCompany.’ ” {16}Upon signing the Bull of Suppression and Extinction in the early hours of the morning(half past one), Pope Clement XIV was reported to have said,Further:“The suppression is accomplished, I do not repent of it, having onlyresolved on it after examining and weighing everything, and because Ithought it necessary for the church. If it were not done, I would do it now.But THIS SUPPRESSION WILL BE MY DEATH.” {17}“We can well believe with what a terrible sense of responsibility the Popesigned this document . . . And he had but too good reasons for personalfear. He had done and dared what none of his predecessors would haveattempted; he knew the penalty and paid for it . . .The signature was made on July 23 rd , 1773. On September 27 th [in fact onthe 22 nd , fourteen months to the day], 1774, he died.” {18}The Jesuits – 1750 - 1773
