Chapter 4 129The Ashbourne Portrait of “Shakespeare,” 1580s #31 Thisportrait of Edward de Vere at the age of forty-seven was hung in the schoolof Ashbourne, a seat of the Trenthams, Oxford’s third wife. It wasultimately acquired <strong>by</strong> the Folger Library of Washington and hangs theretoday. Alterations were revealed <strong>by</strong> x-ray and infrared photographyexecuted <strong>by</strong> Charles Wisner Barrell who, in the early 1950s, published hisfindings in The Scientific Am<strong>eric</strong>an. Some of them were: the courtier’s laceruff had been painted over to resemble a commoner’s plain collar; theboar-crest of the seal ring on the thumb had been obscured; the Trenthamcoat-of-arms in the upper left hand corner had been painted over and thedate changed; the initials “C.K.” for Cornelius Ketel, the famous artist,had been painted out; the hairline was moved back to make him to appearbald.
