Target Audience<br />

Researchers and public health practitioners in respiratory and environmental<br />

Objectives<br />

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:<br />

• understand and apply key concepts in the design and analysis of studies of<br />

DNA methylation and lung disease;<br />

• comprehend the impact of epigenetic studies on prevention (e.g., biomarker<br />

development), diagnosis, and treatment of lung disease;<br />

• learn new and alternative approaches to epigenetic studies.<br />

Lung diseases are multi-factorial,resulting from interactions between genetic and<br />

environmental factors. Heritable and/or de novo changes in gene expression that<br />

occur without alterations in DNA sequence (epigenetic) mediate some environmental<br />

effects on lung disease. We will review state of the art approaches to designing and<br />

implementing studies of epigenetics in general and in pulmonary/critical care/sleep<br />

medicine in particular.<br />

Clinicians managing patients with pulmonary and critical care acquired<br />

infections.<br />

Objectives<br />

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:<br />

• have a much greater understanding of the range of pulmonary infections<br />

that can occur in immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts;<br />

• gain a much better appreciation of the evidence supporting different<br />

treatment strategies in pulmonary infections;<br />

• have a much better knowledge of new diagnostic tests, treatments and<br />

outcome measures that can be applied in their local setting.<br />

This course will provide clinicians with a broad overview and an update of the current<br />

challenging issues in the management of pulmonary and critical care infections<br />

including typical bacterial pneumonia, mycobacterial, fungal, and viral infections as<br />

well as general approaches to infections in the immunocompromised host.<br />
