Target Audience<br />

Physicians (pulmonologists, critical care providers, and sleep medicine<br />

doctors), nurses, and other health care providers as well as trainees<br />

(residents and fellows) interested in learning about the clinical problems<br />

inherent in migrant populations, in educating others about how to care for<br />

these patients, and in how to engage in research.<br />

Objectives<br />

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to:<br />

• summarize the challenges inherent in the delivery of care to migrants;<br />

• discuss the social, political, and economic circumstances that prevent<br />

optimal delivery of care to migrants;<br />

• propose innovated approaches to this issue targeting specific needs of<br />

distinct populations.<br />

The crisis in the Middle East has raised awareness about the challenges<br />

encountered by migrant populations; in particular, health care access and<br />

delivery. Similar challenges are encountered by migrant populations all around<br />

the world including those entering the U.S. as refugees and/or survivors of<br />

torture as well as Mexicans and other Latin Americans crossing the border.<br />

Migrants suffer from medical conditions typical of other populations (e.g.,<br />

asthma, tobacco-related disease, sleep disorders) and conditions relevant to the<br />

nature of their situation including infection (e.g., tuberculosis) and malnutrition.<br />

This session will discuss emerging problems related to health care access and<br />

delivery in migrant populations.<br />
