It's a Dog-Eat-Dog World (McGrowl) No.5 Balaban, Bob
FIC .333 BAL
Thomas and McGrowl have some interesting new neighbors. Cheerful Hiram Biddle and his young niece, Binky,
have set up an obedience school for dogs. Soon, all the neighborhood pups and pooches, including Thomas's
own dynamic doggy, are attending. But then Thomas and McGrowl's partner-in-adventure, Violet, becomes best
buds with Binky-and Thomas feels really left out. When Thomas starts to suspect that Binky may not be as
friendly as she appears, is he just jealous--or might he be on to a sinister plan? This tail-wagging thriller will have
you guessing until the end!
The itsy bitsy spider (Scholastic Big Books) Trapani, Iza.
FIC .096 TRA
The itsy-bitsy spider encounters a fan, a mouse, a cat, and a rocking chair as she makes her way to the top of a
tree to spin her web.
Children can sing the song to the story, but it is like a poem, so it isn't necessary if you don't like to sing. If you
need it, the music notes are on the last page of the book. You sing the same tune to all the verses of Iza's story.
James and the Giant Peach
Dahl, Roald. / Smith, Lane.
FIC .360 DAH
Ages 9-12. When poor James Henry Trotter loses his parents in a horrible rhinoceros accident, he is forced to
live with his two wicked aunts, Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker. After three years he becomes "the saddest and
loneliest boy you could find." Then one day, a wizened old man in a dark-green suit gives James a bag of magic
crystals that promise to reverse his misery forever. When James accidentally spills the crystals on his aunts'
withered peach tree, he sets the adventure in motion. From the old tree a single peach grows, and grows, and
grows some more, until finally James climbs inside the giant fruit and rolls away from his despicable aunts to a
whole new life. James befriends an assortment of hilarious characters, including Grasshopper, Earthworm, Miss
Spider, and Centipede--each with his or her own song to sing. Roald Dahl's rich imagery and amusing characters
ensure that parents will not tire of reading this classic aloud, which they will no doubt be called to do over and
over again! With the addition of witty black and white pencil drawings by Lane Smith (of The Stinky Cheese Man
and Other Fairly Stupid Tales and The True Story of the Three Little Pigs fame), upon which the animation for the
Disney movie was based, this classic, now in paperback, is bursting with renewed vigor. We'll just come right out
and say it: James and the Giant Peach is one of the finest children's books ever written. (Ages 9 to 12)
Jump, Frog, Jump!
Kalan, Robert / Barton, Byron
FIC.040 KAL
A frog tries to catch a fly, but finds himself on the other end of the food chain in this simple cumulative tale by
Robert Kalan (Greenwillow, 1995). As each new danger appears, the frog is left with one option: jump, frog, jump!
The frog's final escape, however, requires the help of a boy.
"This is the turtle that slid into the pond and ate the snake that dropped from a branch and swallowed the fish that
swam after the frog -- JUMP, FROG, JUMP!"
