Deletion Subtest: assesses the student’s ability to manipulate root words, syllables, <strong>and</strong> phonemes in words. The<br />

student is asked to say a word, <strong>and</strong> then say it again deleting one root word (in compound words), syllable, or<br />

phoneme.<br />

Substitution Subtest: (two tasks- <strong>with</strong> manipulatives <strong>and</strong> <strong>with</strong>out manipulatives)<br />

Assesses the student’s ability to isolate a phoneme in a word, then change it to another phoneme forming a new<br />

word.<br />

Blending Subtest: (two tasks- blending of syllables, <strong>and</strong> blending of phonemes) assesses the student’s ability to<br />

blend units of sound together to form words.<br />

Graphemes Subtest: assess the student’s knowledge of sound/symbol correspondence<br />

for: consonants, long <strong>and</strong> short vowels, consonant blends, consonant digraphs, r-controlled vowels, vowel<br />

digraphs, <strong>and</strong> diphthongs.<br />

Decoding Subtest: assesses the student’s ability to generalize their knowledge of sound/symbol correspondences<br />

<strong>and</strong> to blend sounds into unknown words. May not be appropriate for most five year olds. Decoding tasks include:<br />

VC words, CVC words, consonant digraphs, consonant blends, vowel digraphs, R-controlled vowels, CVCe<br />

words, <strong>and</strong> diphthongs.<br />

Invented Spelling: An optional test that does not yield st<strong>and</strong>ardized information. May be used for diagnostic<br />

information about a student’s encoding ability.<br />
