Research supports direct instruction in specific comprehension strategies to improve comprehension (National
Reading Panel, Teaching Children to Read: An Evidence-Based Assessment of the Scientific Research Literature
on Reading and Its Implications for Reading Instruction – Reports of the Subgroups, 2000). The strategies found
to improve memory and comprehension of text include generating questions; constructing mental images;
summarizing; and analyzing the setting, characters, problems, solutions, and ending (Handbook of Reading
Research, Vol. III, 2000).
You’ll find many of these strategies and techniques in Spotlight on Listening Comprehension Story
Comprehension, uniquely presented as listening versus reading tasks. Your students will develop the ability to
have a holistic understanding of stories.
To help your students get meaning from listening to text, four principles are recommended by The National
Capital Language Resource Center (2003, 2004). These are incorporated in the Spotlight on Listening
Comprehension books:
identify the purpose for listening
attend to critical information and ignore less important information
use top-down and bottom-up strategies as appropriate to the task
monitor comprehension of the text throughout the listening task
Description
Your students will learn to listen for specific information with the activities in Spotlight on Listening
Comprehension Story Comprehension. Each activity has a specific listening purpose. The activities are organized
from easy to difficult, beginning with short dialogues with illustrations and ending with longer passages followed
by comprehension questions.
The content of the activities in this book reflects a wide variety of curricular areas as well as daily life experiences.
Vocabulary and sentence structure are controlled at an elementary grade level.
Begin by administering the Pretest. Administer the Posttest at the conclusion to get a measure of progress.
At first, students practice the targeted skill by obtaining visual information from pictures to facilitate
comprehension. As the activities progress, visual cues are eliminated, and passage length and the number of
questions increases.
Activities in order of difficulty include:
Who Am I?
Where Am I?
What’s Happening?
Simple Stories
Absurdities
Identifying Missing Information
Simple Story Map
True/False Questions
Identifying Conflict
Identifying Resolution
Story Map with Problem and Solution
Passages
Story Map: All Story Elements
The activities require minimal writing to complete, and feature fill-in-the blank or multiple-choice formats similar to
tests.
Repeat activities as often as needed to achieve mastery. The question-answering instruction encourages
