Video Observational Learning: A Video
Modeling Application : version 1
Children's Hospital Boston / Shane, 104 .105 CHI
The VIP-Observational Learning software is part of a suite of communication applications developed in the
Autism Language program at Children’s Hospital Boston. It is intended to help individuals learn new behavioral
skills in a two-step learning process (View then Do):
· Step One -“View”: Watch a video in which a model performs the sequence of actions that comprises
the targeted behavioral skill.
· Step Two -“Do”: Practice the skill by imitating the actions of the model just observed in the video.
Candidate Behavioral Skills Learned via Observational Learning
Research with children and adolescents suggests that observational learning, more recently referred to as video
modeling, is effective in teaching a variety of functional behavioral skills:
· Activities of Daily Living - self-help skills (e.g., bathing, grooming, toileting, dressing)
· Life Skills - functional routines that enable students to be more independent in meeting their own
everyday needs at home, school, employment or community (e.g., food preparation, operating appliances, play
skills, exercise skills, vocational skills, eating at a restaurant, using an ATM, grocery shopping)
· Social Pragmatics - appropriate behaviors when interacting with others e.g., greetings and partings,
turn-taking, eye contact, social spacing, “excuse me”).
· Appropriate Behaviors - e.g., acceptable ways of indicating you need a break (without being aggressive
or having a meltdown), smooth transitions, refraining from repetitive behaviors, appropriate speaking volume (not
shouting, but not whispering either), keeping hands to oneself.
· Language Concepts - difficult to understand language concepts (e.g., verbs, prepositions, adjectives,
adverbs)
The VIP-Observational Learning software consists of two modes:
· Design mode - after importing a video of a model performing the targeted behavioral skill, the instructor
creates a lesson. The lesson breaks the video up into its natural sequence of behavioral steps, and for each step
provides a video clip (dynamic scene cue) and a still-frame photo that captures the essential action of that step
(static scene cue).
· Run mode - the Lesson is played for the student who views it then practices. Run mode provides a
variety of ways of viewing the lesson (e.g., dynamic scenes alone, dynamic + static scenes, static scenes alone),
provides highlighting to focus attention on critical actions, and makes I easy to pause the video and replay any
individual step.
