Room 28 is the room where your students come together to work on their social language skills. It is the place for<br />

students to learn strategies they need to get along in school <strong>and</strong> in life. This is where you’ll present information<br />

about communication skills, values, <strong>and</strong> emotions. You’ll teach students to solve problems, resolve conflicts, <strong>and</strong><br />

set goals for themselves.<br />

This program equips instructors <strong>and</strong> students <strong>with</strong> the background knowledge <strong>and</strong> strategies to help students<br />

resolve conflicts before they lead to violence. This instruction is designed to keep the school climate safe,<br />

cooperative, <strong>and</strong> focused on learning.<br />

Room 28 is a 2-book set. The Instructor’s Manual provides background information <strong>and</strong> directions for each<br />

lesson. The Activity Book gives you reproducible activities to complete each lesson. Lessons offer a variety of<br />

activities including vocabulary, role-play scripts, small group discussions, <strong>and</strong> independent worksheets.<br />

Units in this program are organized in a hierarchy, as listed below:<br />

Communication Skills<br />

Students will initiate <strong>and</strong> participate in conversations appropriately.<br />

Underst<strong>and</strong>ing Personal Values<br />

Value clarification exercises will help students uncover their own value systems. Students will create personal<br />

mottos to express their personal values.<br />

Recognizing <strong>and</strong> Controlling Emotions<br />

Students practice recognizing other peoples emotions as well as evaluating emotional responses rationally <strong>and</strong><br />

objectively.<br />

Solving problems<br />

Students evaluate solutions <strong>and</strong> outcomes <strong>and</strong> learn ways to avoid future problems.<br />

Resolving conflicts<br />

Students use their communication skills <strong>and</strong> problem-solving skills during conflict role-plays.<br />

Setting goals<br />

Students create appropriate action plans to achieve short-term <strong>and</strong> long-term personal goals.<br />

This instruction is appropriate for <strong>and</strong> will benefit students <strong>with</strong> Asperger’s, learning disabilities, language<br />

disorders, or hearing impairments.<br />
