Grade 3 and Up
Haugen, Janie
530.569
PCI's Janie Haugen-McLane developed the Survival Signs Curriculum to give teachers a step-by-step way to help
students learn the meaning of 80 indoor and outdoor signs found in the community and at home and work.
The curriculum instruction method gives detailed explanations of both the visuals and the words on each sign. A
perfect teaching tool for the inclusive classroom, the guide includes discussion activities and charts for the
teacher to record the various places in the community where each sign is located. Students who are nonreaders
or who have limited reading skills can rely on visuals on the survival signs to determine each sign's meaning. The
overall purpose of the program is to prepare students of all abilities to follow the directions on common
community survival signs. This method allows many students to travel safely in the community.
Components
Teacher's Binder.
A sturdy three-ring binder contains a two-page teaching guide for each of the 40 outdoor and 40 indoor survival
signs. The Guide also includes discussion activities and a reproducible Community Trip Record Chart for the
teacher to record the various places in the community where each sign is located.
Special Features
This curriculum, used in conjunction with Survival Signs Worksheets and Survival Signs Bingo (each available
separately), gives instructors an assessment tool, teaching methods and materials, and reinforcement practice.
Indoor Signs include,
Escalator, Exit, Fire Extinguisher, Food, Keep Out, Men, No Pets, No food or drink, out of order, recycle,
restroom, slippery when wet, and others.
The outdoor signs include:
Airport; Beware of Dog; Bike Route; Buckle Up for Safety; Bus Stop; Call 911Emergency; Do Not Enter; Don't
Walk; Fire Station; Flood Gauge; High Voltage Danger; Hospital
Swimmy
Lionni, Leo
FIC .032 LIO
Swimmy is the only little fish amongst his brothers and sisters who was born black instead of red. A faster fish
than all of them, Swimmy has the mixed blessing of being able to out swim a big fish that has come to devour his
family. Poor Swimmy is left all alone in the world, but his sadness doesn't last for very long. The undersea world is
full of wonders, including medusas made of rainbow jelly, a forest of seaweeds growing from sugar candy rocks,
and sea anemones that look like, "pink palm trees swaying in the wind". When Swimmy stumbles across another
group of small red fish, his quick thinking helps them to band together to fight the larger fish in the sea.
