The most popular alternative, language-controlled reading program
Reading Milestones is the most popular reading program of its kind. This successful alternative, language
controlled program is especially effective for students with hearing impairments and language delays, and is also
widely used with others who have special language and reading needs including individuals with learning
disabilities and students learning English as a second language. It is designed to take readers to approximately a
fifth-grade reading level with graphics, content, and presentation that are appropriate for readers of all ages.
Revisions made in the third edition were based on recent research, new practices in reading, and feedback from
users of the series. An update kit is available for those currently using Levels 1-3.
Features
Placement Tests:
Reading Milestones placement tests help teachers start their students at the correct reading level. Conducted by
either the classroom teacher or an aide, each test evaluates students in three areas:word meaning, sentence
meaning, and silent reading comprehension. These tests can be given to individuals or small groups. An
Administration Guide includes assessment problems and solutions, general administration guidelines, scoring
and interpretation, and test construction.
Readers:
Each level of the program includes ten readers with six stories per book.The stories include characters that
represent a wide variety of ethnicities and settings. African Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and
other minority groups are represented, and many stories have urban and inner-city settings.
Workbooks:
A student workbook emphasizing the development of comprehension and its primacy in the reading process
accompanies each of the readers. Workbook tasks foster literal and inferential comprehension, and the solving of
problems through the use of a variety of procedures: semantic, story, and word maps; semantic feature analyses;
and word analogies. Because students with special needs require more practice in some of the mechanical
aspects of the reading process than other students, there are a substantial number of tasks for developing these
skills.
Spelling Books:
Each level of the Reading Milestones program now includes a spelling component comprised of two books. The
first spelling book of each level covers books 1-5 and the second book covers books 6-10. Each section of the
spelling books begins with a pre-test followed by a series of spelling practice activities, and concludes with a
mastery test. A spelling progress chart is provided at the end of each unit.
Reading Bridge:
This component provides a bridge from Reading Milestones to general reading materials at the 4th and 5th
grade levels. Vocabulary, language structures, and comprehension skills are introduced in the same spiraling,
research-based approach as in the first six levels of Reading Milestones, but at an accelerated rate and more
advanced level, and in age-appropriate, hardcover books.
Glossaries:
Each new word, with a picture and sentence using that word, appears in a New Words section at the back of the
book in which the word is introduced.The glossaries at the end of each reader progress from very simple
(illustrations convey meaning) to more sophisticated (guide words, syllabication, parts of speech, and verbal
definition). All glossaries demonstrate contextual use of vocabulary. As students become familiar with the
glossary section of the readers, they should be encouraged to look up words they do not understand, thus
developing dictionary skills.
Teacher's Guides:
The instructional suggestions contained in the Teacher's Guides provide educators-especially beginning
teachers- with sufficient information to make Reading Milestones a self-contained program. They are organized
