Explore Your Newspaper provides 100 different lessons that teach and reinforce basic
skills using any newspaper. Organized according to the most common sections found
in newspapers, each lesson integrates a basic skill, such as categorizing, interpreting
charts or graphs, and writing complete sentences, into an activity that requires
students to search through a newspaper and find specific information The binder
has been arranged so that each lesson page and its accompanying worksheet face
each other for easy reference and planning.
In general, the lessons have been written so that they can stand alone.
Teachers can choose to teach the lessons in any order based on the kinds of information and basic
skills their students need. A few of the lessons, for example, Lesson 9, Picture This,
and Lesson 10, What Do You See?, build on each other and work best if taught
in the order presented.
Activity sheets in the program have been designed as individual assignments.
However, the instructions for any activity can be easily modified to include partners
or small groups. Teachers should encourage partners and small groups to discuss
their suggested answers to each question and come to consensus before writing
any answer on the activity sheet.
