Sequencing activities improve student performance on many academic tasks, such as scientific experiments.
Students remain engaged throughout the discovery process by finding puzzle pieces that sequentially solve the
problem. (Sequencing Problem Solving and Hands On Activities, Sean Brophy, Vanderbilt University Learning
Technology Center). Therefore, sequencing questions help students focus on what happened first, next, and last
in the story and teach them to sequence events.
If your students cannot keep track of the information they hear and recall the order in which they hear it, the
step-by-step method in Spotlight on Listening Comprehension Sequencing will help them.
To help your students get meaning from a listening text, four principles are recommended by The National Capital
Language Resource Center (2003, 2004). These are incorporated in the Spotlight on Listening Comprehension
books:
identify the purpose for listening
attend to critical information and ignore less important information
use top-down and bottom-up strategies as appropriate to the task
monitor comprehension of the text throughout the listening task
Description
The content of the activities in this book reflects a wide variety of curricular areas as well as daily life experiences.
Vocabulary and sentence structure are controlled at an elementary grade level.
Begin by administering the Pretest. Administer the Posttest at the conclusion to get a measure of progress.
The activities are sequenced by complexity:
First, students perform discrete listening tasks, such as sequencing numbers, putting letters or words in
alphabetical order, unscrambling sentences, identifying sound position in words, and forming new words.
Activities progress to sequencing by time, by attributes, and by cause/effect.
Then, students practice following directions involving up to four steps.
Finally, they listen to and recall the sequence of recipes and stories with a variety of curricular and everyday
contexts.
The activities require minimal writing to complete and feature fill-in-the blank or multiple-choice formats similar to
tests.
Repeat activities as often as needed to achieve mastery. The question-answering instruction encourages
students to attend to relevant information in order to answer questions accurately (Put Reading First, Center for
the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement [CIERA], 2001).
Students learn to scan for key information, visualize what they hear, and listen for the purpose of recalling
information in sequence. The activities strengthen oral expression by asking students to explain the rationale or
clues they used to determine their answers.
A CD-ROM of activity pages is included so you can print student pages from your computer.
Students must process and follow dozens of directions every day, and storing and recalling that information in the
correct order can make the difference between success and failure. Spotlight on Listening Comprehension
Sequencing trains your students to keep track of the information they hear and to recall the order in which they
hear it.
