Using a whole word approach, the software versions teach recognition and comprehension of words for students
with developmental or learning disabilities and ESL students.
Regarded as "the one that works" by many teaching professionals, the new software version can be used
independently or in direct correlation with the Edmark Reading Program, Level 1, print version, providing
educators with another excellent tool to help students achieve reading success. Both versions have exactly the
same lesson structure in exactly the same sequence to address multiple learning styles and create varied
activities to fully engage students. Also known as the School Version, the Level 1 software version allows two
users at a time to participate in the high-tech learning activities.
Throughout the software lessons and activities, high-quality audio cues, instructions, and feedback are provided,
while an optional "Call Your Teacher" prompt instructs students to raise a hand and wait for a teacher's
assistance. Stars are added to students' on-screen reward certificates at the completion of each posttest, giving
students a feeling of accomplishment as they learn to read. This independent learning structure is especially
effective for developing independent skills and placing students with special needs into inclusive classrooms and
integrated settings.
Colorful graphics and friendly host characters lead students through self-paced, independent learning. Direction
Card and Picture/Phrase Card lessons represent a broad diversity of people, role models, and settings. The
Stories include 29 original multi-page stories, each with a unique artistic style. Students can click on individual
words or whole sentences to hear them read aloud. Additional features allow students to record their own voice
for later playback of their reading, and to print out copies of the stories to take home.
Management tools allow teachers to individualize the program to meet specific student needs, such as setting an
option to display standard program screens with multiple artistic elements, or screens with simplified backgrounds
that add visual clarity but teach the same reading content. Automatic record- keeping is included with the
software version, tracking student progress for each lesson. The Teacher's Guide provides learning objectives,
classroom activity ideas, resource room suggestions, and other information about the program.
