Skilled readers are good at making inferences and use what they know, context, pictures, vocabulary, body
language, and other clues to draw conclusions ( National Capital Language Resource Center, 2006). However, if
your students struggle and make incorrect inferences, it may be because they have a language or learning
disability. Fortunately, you can teach students how to make inferences to boost their listening comprehension.
Help your students detect and use clues in what they hear that suggest what happened and where, why, and
when it happened, and to predict what will happen next with Spotlight on Listening Comprehension Making
Inferences.
To help your students get meaning from a listening text, four principles are recommended by The National Capital
Language Resource Center (2003, 2004). These are incorporated in the Spotlight on Listening Comprehension
books:
identify the purpose for listening
attend to critical information and ignore less important information
use top-down and bottom-up strategies as appropriate to the task
monitor comprehension of the text throughout the listening task
Description
The content of the activities in this book reflects a wide variety of curricular areas as well as daily life experiences.
Vocabulary and sentence structure are controlled at an elementary grade level.
Begin by administering the Pretest. Administer the Posttest at the conclusion to get a measure of progress.
First students practice the targeted skill by obtaining visual information from pictures to facilitate comprehension.
Students learn to think about and make inferences of one type before moving to other types:
Inferences About Where Inferences From Reading
Inferences About When Nonverbal Language
Inferences About Reasons Inferences from Pantomime
Inferences About Feelings Speaking Style
Predictions
Finally, visual cues are eliminated and students practice combined inferencing skills.
The activities require minimal writing to complete, and feature fill-in-the blank or multiple-choice formats similar to
tests.
Repeat activities as often as needed to achieve mastery. The question-answering instruction encourages
students to attend to relevant information in order to answer questions accurately (Put Reading First, Center for
the Improvement of Early Reading Achievement [CIERA], 2001).
Students learn to scan for key information, visualize what they hear, and listen for the purpose of making
inferences. The activities also strengthen oral expression by asking students to explain the rationale or clues they
used to determine their answers.
A CD-ROM of activity pages is included so you can print student pages from your computer.
