**Making Social Inferences (Spotlight on
Social Skills Adolescent)
LoGiudice, Carolyn / Johnson, Paul F. 564 .334 LOG
Adolescents who have not acquired appropriate social skills on their own are unlikely to develop them without
specific instruction. Targeted language intervention with at-risk students may result in more cautionary, socially
acceptable behaviors (Moore-Brown et al., 2002). Intervention for adolescents with language impairments may
include objectives aimed at improving deficient social communication skills (Henry et al., 1995; Bliss, 1992).
Outcomes
Detect and interpret others’ perspectives correctly
Increase success in social communication and social interactions
Boost self-esteem by learning how to control social interactions
Learn to control and participate in social interactions appropriately
Making Social Inferences teaches these important skills:
Discriminate an inference from a guess
Make inferences about locations, occupations, and actions
Infer from body language
Determine what to say/do in public and private settings
Make decisions and understand how decisions affect others
Consider and apply social status in communication
Infer from information known about the person, place, and message
Understand and appropriately use teasing
Make appropriate social comments
Interpret indirect requests
Judge and understand consequences
Hats off! Applause, applause! Adolescents will “take a bow” as they master specific social skill areas by
understanding different social perspectives. Personalized instruction targets social communication and behavior
skills that help students apply what they learn to real-world situations. Instruction methods include explicit
teaching, modeling, observation, discussion, role-playing, and guided practice. A pretest/posttest is included. Use
each activity with individual students or small groups of students with similar skill deficits.
Social Skills Elementary)
The activity sheets offer many opportunities to explain and discuss the clues that lead to logical inferences,
making social expectations and behaviors explicit for those who do not abstract the dynamics of social
relationships without direct explanations and examples. The activities include direct instruction, observation,
role-playing, modeling, discussion, and other guided practice in contexts of everyday interaction. The
highly-motivating activity pages are filled with graphic organizers and interesting photos and art. The lessons can
be presented to individual students or small groups of students. A pretest/posttest and a progress checklist are
included.
Outcomes
Develop age-appropriate social language and interaction skills
Improve self-esteem and learn to make friends
Interact successfully in the classroom
Understand peers' perspectives
