Corduroy : story and pictures
Freeman, Don, 1908-1978. / Freeman, FIC .080 FRE
Corduroy is a toy bear who sits on a shelf in a toy department of a large store. He dreams about someone taking
him home, but nobody wants to buy him. People keep running around without even noticing Corduroy. Then one
day his dream almost comes true: a young girl stops and looks at him, and tells her mother that she wants this
bear. But the mother refuses to buy him. They've already spent all the money, she says, and besides, he's
missing a button. The girl leaves.
When the store is closed for the night, Corduroy decides to go look for his lost button. He comes down from the
shelf and starts exploring the store. His adventures include getting to the furniture department and trying to take a
button off a mattress – unsuccessfully. Corduroy falls off the bed and knocks down a lamp. A security guard
hears the noise; he finds Corduroy and takes him back to the toy department.
On the next day, the girl returns. Corduroy still has no button, but she doesn't care! She likes him the way she is,
and she has brought all her savings to buy him. Corduroy is going home with her.
Crane Crossing (The Wild Thornberrys) Dubowski, Mark / Durk, Jim
FIC .333 DUB
Join the Thornberry family as they help lead a flock of endangered, pen-raised whooping cranes north for the
spring. The long trip from Texas to Canada starts out well, but the youngest crane seems upset. After talking to
the bird, Eliza realizes that the little crane, called Maggie, is homesick. Eliza is not only surprised by this, but
wonders what home means to her, since Eliza's home is mostly on the road. When Maggie is chased away from
the flock by an angry eagle, Eliza and Darwin set out to find her, and run into some trouble of their own. Will they
all return safe and sound? Here's another exciting adventure with The Wild Thornberrys to remind us that home
is truly where the heart is.
