Miss Bindergarten gets ready for kindergarten
1st ed.
Slate, Joseph. / Wolff, Ashley
FIC .032 SLA
Synopsis: On the first day of kindergarten, Miss Bindergarten must prepare her classroom for her beloved
students. This noble, whimsical teacher greets her dark, summertime-empty classroom with an explosion of
color--a bouquet of fall leaves, a goldfish, rolled-up posters, and shoeboxes full of no-doubt-delightful surprises.
Possible Educational Talking Points:
Discussion topics for before reading:
• What did you do to get ready for kindergarten? What do you in the morning?
• What do you think your teacher does to get ready for kindergarten?
Discussion topics for during/after reading:
• Write down each child’s first name, and create a little rhyme for each.
• How did the teacher get ready for kindergarten?
Craft ideas:
• From the first letter of the child’s first name, write their name and the corresponding animal from the
last page in the book (or another one if he/she can come up with one) on a piece of paper, and have them draw
the picture.
• Write a card to your kindergarten teacher with pictures showing everyone getting ready for the first day
of kindergarten.
Special activities:
• Read the book again, and have the children act out what each person does.
Miss Mopp's lucky day
McGuire, Leslie. / Silver, Jody.
FIC .065 MCG
"A Parents magazine read aloud and easy reading program® selection" While walking through the woods to
deliver her cakes, the unobservant Miss Mopp avoids disaster when the threat of a rain storm makes her
remember something she forgot.
The Mitten
Aylesworth, Jim / McClintock, Barbara FIC .092 AYL
PreSchool-Grade 3 - This is a delightful adaptation of the Ukrainian folktale in which a dropped mitten becomes
a haven of warmth and protection for an increasing number of woodland animals until it finally bursts (or, in one
story, stretches out and is carried off by the wind). From the very first sentences"Once upon a time there was a
happy little boy who loved to play. Yes, he did." the narrative draws readers into the story and begs to be read
aloud. The text contains both repetitive phrases and a memorable refrain—"'Please!' begged the fox./My toes are
cold as ice!/Your mitten looks so cozy,/and warm toes would feel so nice!" The gouache and watercolor
illustrations with ink outlining and detail include single pages and spreads alternating with pages that contain
several small vignettes, each accompanied by a bit of text.
