Autism & PDD: Social Skills with Friends :
Picture Stories & Language Activities
Ages: 3-8 Grades: PreK-3rd
This approach works especially well for children with autism because they do not understand or like the “gray”
areas of social interaction. This program separates behaviors into easy-to-understand categories of right vs.
wrong.
Outcomes
Categorize social behaviors into two groups: RIGHT vs. WRONG
Identify and use new vocabulary
Process verbal information through matching sentences and pictures
Answer yes/no questions
Answer who, what, where, when, how, and why questions
Take turns role-playing the actions in the stories
Recall and retell the story through take-home activities
Program Description
The book starts with a chapter of lesson plans which is followed by eight social stories. Each story comes with
four colored pictures and accompanying sentence strips.
Students role-play the wrong ways to act in addition to the right ways with each story. When they do this, students
with autism divide the pictures in their minds into “black” and “white” (“If I act this way, it’s wrong. If I act this way,
its’ right.”). You’ll also get a progress monitoring chart to illustrate outcomes and reproducible homework sheets.
The program is structured to introduce one story lesson each week. There are lessons plans for each day that
include suggestions for simplifying the program for lower-functioning students.
In addition to social skills, your students will practice important receptive and expressive language skills. For
children with autism, the routine and structure of this program and the familiar characters will reduce anxiety.
Decreasing anxiety facilitates more compliant behavior, which increases the amount of learning time.
