**Social Skills Lessons: Health & Hygiene
(Autism & PDD)
Reese, Pam Britton. / Challenner, Nena 500 .449
Help students learn about their bodies and prepare for a healthy life with lessons in this book from the Autism &
PDD: Adolescent Social Skills series.
Benefits
* Improves health and hygiene habits in your students with autism
* Helps facilitate inclusion of students with autism into regular classrooms
* Gives adolescents confidence in their increasingly complex world
Features
* Targets typical health and hygiene needs that students with autism need help with
* Provides a short, one-page rebus story for each lesson
* Contains lessons for working one-on-one with the student as well as lessons for group work
* Includes charts and forms to track progress
Adolescence brings many dramatic physical and emotional changes. Some of the lessons in Health & Hygiene
teach adolescents about their changing bodies and help prepare them for independent self-care (e.g., Wearing
Bras). Other lessons teach health habits (e.g., Smoking) and making important decisions for a healthy life (e.g.,
The Checkup).
Some of the lessons included are:
* Overeating
* Washing Hands
* Scabs
* A Cavity
* Immunizations
* Wearing Bras
* My Changing Body (boys)
* Acne
* Brushing Teeth
* Wearing Different Clothes
This book has two types of lessons: instructional and behavioral. The instructional lessons are intended to teach
adolescents what they need to do or say in social situations that are sometimes overwhelming (e.g., What Can I
Do about Acne?). Use these instructional lessons as part of a social skills curriculum with small groups. The
behavioral lessons target specific social problems that need to be stopped (e.g., Overeating). Use these lessons
with an individual.
Each one-page rebus story keeps students focused on learning and practicing a specific social skill related to
health and hygiene. You choose the order in which to present these non-sequential lessons. Then document
progress with The Record of Progress and tracking forms.
