things that appeared to move were his eyes. When someone<br />

addressed him, he didn't switch his attention<br />

immediately, as most people would do. Instead, after a<br />

suitable delay, he would allow his head and eyes to drift<br />

towards the person, almost as though he'd been filmed in<br />

slow motion. <strong>The</strong> Emperor's actions were executed without<br />

the slightest hint <strong>of</strong> urgency. Every glance, every<br />

gesture, was performed at an imperial pace, in his own<br />

time. It reminded me <strong>of</strong> what Nietzsche, the German<br />

philosopher, said when someone asked him, 'What is<br />

aristocratic?' <strong>The</strong> slow gesture and the slow glance,' he<br />

replied.<br />
