Originario del Hemisferio Norte, Europa y Asia. Actualmente se cultiva en China, Rusia (zonas de Siberia y el Caucaso), Alemania (costa mar del Norte y Baltico), Noruega, Suecia y Finlandia, en 10s Alpes (en zonas rocosas y pedregosas en las orillas de 10s rios) (Albrecht et a/.,1993), en 10s Carpatos, en la regi6n central desde el Caucaso, en Asia en valles de rios, zonas de estepas y bosques a orillas de rios. e incluso en el Tibet hasta los6.ooO m. Descripcidn botanica Es un arbusto que puede llega a medir 3 a4 m de altura, con hojas caducas de color gris plateado, pubescentes en la parte abaxial. Es una especie dioica (sexos separados en plantas distintas), cuyas flores son polinizadas por el viento (anem6fila). Las flores son muy pequeiias, sin nectarios (Koch, 1987; Luetjohann, 1999) y poco visibles. Las yemas masculinas son mas grandes y con forma de piiia, mientras que las femeninas son mas pequeiias y generalmente presentan dos bracteas protectoras. Esta diferencia es visible s610 en plantas adultas a 10s 6 a 7 aAos. 245
