Valeriana officinalis I Valerianaceae. Originaria de Europa y el oeste de Asia. Europa y Asia septentrional, generalmente en lugares hirmedos y sombreados, bosques, tierras cercanas a 10s arroyos y zonas montatiosas hasta 10s 2.000 metros de altura. Se cultiva en el centro de Europa, Inglaterra, Francia, Polonia y en India, Japbn, Mexico y EstadoS Unidos (Dachler y Pelzmann, 1989; Brendler et a/., 1999). Descripcidn botanica Es una planta perenne, arbustiva, que puede alcanzar entre 70 y 170 cm de altura. Sus hojas imparipinadas estan subdivididas en 13 a 23 foliolos lanceolados y en la base del tallo se ordenan en roseta, mientras que sobre el se ubican en forma opuesta. Las flores, de color blanco o rosado, son pequeRas y estan reunidas en cimas en el extremo apical del tallo a partirdel segundo aiio de vegetacih El fruto es un aquenio que mide alrededor de 3 mm, con una quilla a un lado y, al ser muy liviano, es arrastrado por el viento (Mutioz, 1993). 275
