PHILOSOPHY AND

PRINCIPLES OF THE

SCHOOL HEALTH

PROGRAM

D ELBERT O BERTEUFFER

T he program of health education in schools has come a long way in the twenty - five

years of the existence of this Association [the American School Health Association,

founded in 1927]. The evolution of practice and principle has been strong, sure, and

constructive. From humble beginnings the program has become a giant — a giant

whose scope is broad, whose activities are legion, and, more important, whose results

are everywhere around us.

But does it have a body of principle — and is it guided by any philosophical considerations?

The answer is obvious. It does. Let us look at at least three of these basic

considerations to see if we can find any agreement as to their essentiality and any common

understanding as to their application.
