4. More Realistic Teacher Preparation

The preparation of prospective health teachers is top - heavy with theory. The last

thing a graduating health teacher encounters is a student. To a mission - oriented

teacher the confrontation often comes with a brutal shock. Health teachers need much

more practical work in their preparation, such as nurses get in good nursing schools

and training hospitals. Apprenticeship experiences should be started in the freshman and

sophomore years. Juniors should be required to take a field work course in community

health education. School observations plus realistic microteaching should lead

up to student teaching — preferably off campus. I feel that a full year of student teaching

is highly desirable with some experience in urban schools and ghetto areas.
