26 Philosophical Foundations of Health Education

The act of collaboration affords ordinary people a voice in the schools and reduces

feelings of powerlessness resulting from frequently unresponsive bureaucracies, and it

discovers community perceptions of local health problems and their bearing on students

and families. The nationwide effort to promote the community - based drug programs

certainly supports the practice of school - community planning to meet a local

health situation. Other examples of school - community collaboration are plentiful. In

Louisiana the Comprehensive Health Education Guide was developed with the express

help of multicultural groups so that it would be completely useful when implemented.

In Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Health Curriculum Progression Chart was prepared

from outcome statements at the state level and reflects the different geographical

regions and ethnic and cultural differences within the state.

Finally, it should be acknowledged that people have to struggle together to reach

common goals. Conrad knew this well when he wrote that “ man is born; he struggles;

he dies. ” — a pretty short life history. The key word here is struggles . Life is a struggle

— a struggle to generate the capacity to perform well and to achieve a certain

happiness.
