P reparation of leaders in the field of public health is one of the many responsibilities

of graduate education in the field. There is renewed interest in public health education

in the use of a practice internship as a routine part of masters education and closer

attention to this internship by the Council on Education in Public Health, the accrediting

body for public health programs. There has been a call for the inclusion of practice

components that are integral parts of the entire curriculum and that are not limited to

either the practice internship or to masters students (Legnini, 1994). Traditionally,

doctoral student preparation has been viewed as a research - based curriculum, with

limited attention to practice components. However, doctorally prepared students are

also expected to provide leadership in the field in a variety of settings.
