HEALTH EDUCATORS AND

THE FUTURE: LEAD,

FOLLOW, OR GET OUT

OF THE WAY

N OREEN M. C LARK

B ecause I live in Michigan, a reader might think that I stole the title of this article

from Lee Iacocca (who used it in a car commercial) or that he stole the phrase from

me. In fact, we both stole it from someone else.

Since this is an article about health education, the future, and leadership, I thought

this was a good title. The point I want to make is that it is crucial that we provide

invigorated leadership in health education as the twenty - first century draws near. If we

don ’ t shape the direction of events in health education, others less able will. The forces

of change are moving quickly, and if we don ’ t guide them, we ’ ll have no choice but to

follow or be pushed out of the way.

I am focusing this discussion in response to three questions:

1. What is the context for change between now [1994] and 2050 — the trends that

will reshape America in the next sixty years?

Note: This article is intended to be read for its pholosophical perspective. Originally published in 1994, it may

contain factual material or examples that are dated.
