BEHAVIOR IN

HEALTH EDUCATION

Health educators have the unique opportunity to shape and influence behavioral

health. Health educators who espouse the behavior change philosophy believe that

while the cognitive and affective domains are important parts of the process, the

psychomotor domain is the ultimate objective. Green, Kreuter, Deeds, and Partridge

(1980) brought this philosophy to the forefront of the profession by defining health

education as “ any combination of learning experiences designed to facilitate adaptations

of behavior conducive to health ” (p. 7). Key tenets in the methodology of

behavior change are motivation programs, behavior modification, goal setting and
