Human Ecology and Health Education 241

ENDNOTE

1. Justus von Liebig established a scientific principle, over one hundred years ago,

that became known as the “ law of the minimum ” : essentially the growth of a population

or the life of an individual organism will be limited by whatever essential

factor(s) is in shortest supply. The Ehrlichs (1970, p. 51) discuss space, heat, available

energy, nonrenewable resources, food and water, and air as examples of some

of the potentially limiting factors for human individuals and populations.
