FREEING/

FUNCTIONING IN

HEALTH EDUCATION

The freeing/functioning philosophy in health education offers an alternative approach

and purpose. The focus of health education for a professional who espouses this philosophy

would be a holistic and humanistic approach that acknowledges the whole

person. Grounded in principles of humanistic psychology, the freeing/functioning philosophy

promotes the development of the entire person. Early pioneers in the adoption

of this philosophy by the health education profession include Russell (1975), Nolte

(1976), and Greenberg (1978). This philosophy in health education is interested in how

people function, totally, despite some practices not generally correlated with health.
