SOCIAL CHANGE IN
HEALTH EDUCATION
The purpose of social change philosophy in health education is to advocate for environmental,
economic, and political conditions that make healthy choices possible.
Social change philosophy asserts that focusing on individual ’ s responsibility for health
is ineffective and distracts from the environmental and economic factors that have
larger effects on the health of a nation. According to social change philosophy,
individual emphasis on health fails to acknowledge inequalities in society which
effectively determine the health of individuals.
Health education programs designed to support this philosophy would be based
on social morality and justice in order to influence social determinants of health and
illness. In social change philosophy, the practitioner would work toward a more
equitable health care system, place greater emphasis on policy changes, and be an
