SOUTH CAUCASIAN CIVILIZATION IN THE 2 ND AND 1 ST
MILLENNIA B.C.
Archaeological explorations, decoding of satellite and aerial photography,
conducted in the last years, have led to the detection of an entire system
of proto-urban settlement in the Iori river basin and on the whole of the
Iori Plateau, dated by the end of the 2 nd millennium and the beginning of the
1 st millennium B.C. Large settlements of that period protected by the solid
fortification system are situated in Iori Plateau, at every three or four kilometers,
consisting, as a rule, of two parts. A citadel, surrounded by several
strong walls and defencive ditches is situated on the monument summit.
They are followed by residential blocks planned as terraces and protected
by solid fortified constructions on the mountain slope.
Alongside with large settlements on Iori Plateau we encounter small settlements
as well. In the majority of cases they are grouped into dence clusters.
In my opinion, it would be reasonable to consider them together as a
single unit. It seems realistic that the most of the large settlements were
constructed at the same time according to the pre-planned projects. This is
confirmed by well-arranged cabinets within the wall and defensive constructions
forming a strong fortification system well adjusted to the relief.
Decoding of satellite and air photo shootings often give us an opportunity
to re-establish the complex water supply system of these settlements.
